When Filing Taxes This Year, Apply for an Identity Protection PIN

Taxpayers filing in 2021 are now eligible for one-time use identity protection PIN from the Internal Revenue Service.

The Identity Protection PIN Opt-In Program was previously only available to taxpayers who had filed Identity Theft Affidavits. The IRS announced the expansion of eligibility to all taxpayers last year as part of its Security Summit effort to curb tax-related identity theft and fraud.

“When you have this special code, it prevents someone else from filing a tax return with your Social Security number,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “The fastest way to get an Identity Protection PIN is to use our online tool but remember you must pass a rigorous authentication process.”

Taxpayers who opt into the Identity Protection PIN Program will need to obtain a new six-digit code every year.
